What is Dyad?

Dyad is a piece of social technology that creates the space and toolkit to meet others in your city for conversations, on your own terms. We practice collective governance and are on our path towards steward ownership, a cooperative model where ownership is shared among the team and the members.

Why does Dyad exist?

We did not like how being social online felt. The platforms we met on left little room for our humanity, no room for the complexity of what we carry or the meaning we make of it together. So we built a way back to something older: conversation, in person, as how we find our way.

We are in service to connection and collective sensemaking, and to a horizon where the capability and the wealth a community generates stay with the community.

How do we operate?

For us, building Dyad has been a practice of worldbuilding. We began by looking closely at what makes incumbent platforms harmful and came to understand the systemic nature of the problem. Our interventions therefore reach beneath the interface, into ownership, incentives, governance, and the technical choices that shape how the system behaves.

We design for self-determination.

You decide how you participate, what you share, who you meet, what support looks like, and whether you stay. We collect less, infer less, and avoid building systems that decide on your behalf who you are or what you should want.

We make power visible and share it.

Policies, governance documents, finances, and significant product decisions are made legible to the people they affect. Members can raise concerns, join sounding boards, bring proposals into assemblies, and help shape Dyad's policies and priorities. Not every decision requires a vote, but every decision should have a clear home, a responsible steward, and a path for participation or review.

We treat care as shared infrastructure.

We cannot promise that harm will never happen. We can promise not to leave people alone with it. Reports are reviewed, decisions are documented, consequences are proportionate, and appeals are possible. The team currently carries much of this responsibility, but as Dyad grows, stewardship of the community should become more widely shared.

We keep capital in service of the mission.

Dyad is not funded through advertising, or surveillance. We are moving toward member funding and steward ownership so financial pressure cannot quietly override the purpose of the company. Money should make the work possible, not determine what the work becomes.

Why support us?

Dyad is an independent startup, bootstrapped so far by a small team. With the beta now ready to be used, we are turning to our early members to sustain the work and begin the transition toward collective ownership.

If 500 people choose to support Dyad financially by the end of August, we can remain independent while pursuing the future we are already seeding: social technology in service of connection and collective sensemaking, owned and governed by its community.

By building this in practice, we hope to widen what feels possible for social technology, and make the case for collective ownership and open-source infrastructure as credible alternatives to the platforms we have inherited.
